Appa Toric IOLs are designed to reduce the amount of residual refractive cylinder in patients undergoing cataract surgery. For optimum results, an Appa Toric IOL should compensate for post-operative corneal astigmatism resulting not only from the pre-operative corneal astigmatism, but also any surgically induced astigmatism. To ensure optimal results, manual keratometry should be used to determine pre-operative corneal astigmatism. This is important because the Appa Toric IOL Calculator uses manual keratometry in the calculation nomogram. Ideally, the surgical procedure should be astigmatically neutral. However, even small incision cataract surgery can induce corneal astigmatism that affects both the amount and axis of the post-operative corneal astigmatism. It is recommended that surgeons customize this important variable based upon their individual surgical technique and historical results (similar to the customization of an A-constant). The Appa Toric IOL calculator is a tool to assist the surgeon in estimating the amount of post-operative corneal astigmatism to be corrected, selecting the recommended Appa Toric IOL model, and in determining the optimal axis location of the IOL within the capsular bag.
